Nadheer’s story

Age 24

When we first met Nadheer, they had just left education after realising it wasn’t the right path. At the time, they described feeling “lost – uncertain about my future and unsure of which direction to take.”

Although he had a growing interest in working within the Civil Service, their confidence was low. Without a degree, clear career prospects, or financial support, they felt overwhelmed. “I felt like I had already failed.”

Out of necessity, Nadheer applied for Universal Credit and began attending regular appointments. It was during these sessions that a spark of inspiration was lit. He found himself admiring the role of their Work Coach and the meaningful impact they made on others.

“I admired their purpose and the difference they made, but still, I believed a Civil Service role was out of reach for someone like me – someone without qualifications or a track record of success.”

That changed during one appointment when their Work Coach shared a piece of advice that would shift everything: a degree wasn’t required to join the Civil Service. That small moment of encouragement became a turning point.

Lincoln’s support made all the difference. He worked with me one-on-one, identifying my strengths and weaknesses

“I went home and began researching how to apply, reading everything I could,” Nadheer said. “I submitted application after application and started getting interviews – but I struggled to perform well during them.”

Eventually, Nadheer was referred to the Pathway to Work programme, delivered in partnership with Universal Credit. While the programme provided valuable support with applications, interviews continued to be a challenge – until he met Lincoln.

Lincoln, one of our guest speakers, provided tailored support on CV writing and interview preparation. “Lincoln’s support made all the difference. He worked with me one-on-one, identifying my strengths and weaknesses, and teaching me strategies to succeed in Civil Service interviews.”

That extra support proved transformational. With new skills, a refined CV, and growing self-belief, Nadheer began applying everything he’d learned. His confidence soared.

But Lincoln’s support didn’t end when the programme did. He stayed in touch, continuing to check in and offer guidance. When Nadheer finally secured a role with the Department for Work and Pensions as a Work Coach, Lincoln even helped him access professional clothing through a company scheme – a crucial gesture when he couldn’t afford it himself.

Thanks to his determination, the Pathway to Work programme, and Lincoln’s dedicated support, Nadheer has turned things around. “I now have the tools and confidence to build a long-term career in the Civil Service. I’m no longer unsure about my future – I’m working in a role I’m passionate about, with the skills and determination to continue moving forward.”

He added: “I couldn’t have asked for a better mentor, coach, or friend.
