Dylan’s story

Age 21

Dylan, from Birmingham, began college with a clear plan: gain qualifications, build experience, and start a career in the trades. But like many young people, the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted those plans.

During lockdown, Dylan struggled with his mental health, motivation, and confidence. Education came to a halt, and he felt unsupported and unsure about his future. By the time restrictions lifted nearly two years later, Dylan found himself older, uncertain about returning to college, and doubting his employability chances.

“No college prospects, no job opportunities, just a lot of self-doubt became my new normal.”

Determined to find support, Dylan visited his local Job Centre. After exploring various options, he was introduced to Sport 4 Life UK, where he met his mentor, Karl. Dylan shared his struggles – from loss of motivation to lack of confidence – and Karl immediately put a plan in place to get him back on track.

Sport 4 Life helped me get back on track and believe in myself again.

Through Sport 4 Life, Dylan accessed:

  • Functional Skills training in English and Maths
  • The HATCH programme, gaining paid work experience
  • Weekly mentoring, including CV building, job applications, and interview support

With consistent guidance and encouragement, Dylan secured his first paid job as a warehouse operative, giving him experience, financial independence, and renewed confidence.

Now, Dylan is focused on the next step in his journey: pursuing a career in the police force. With qualifications, experience, and the support of Sport 4 Life, he has the confidence and skills to chase his ambitions.
