Bano’s story
Age 19
For most, university is the clear next step after college, especially when you’re set on a five-year medical degree. But for Bano, life had other plans. Instead of heading straight into the intense world of medical studies, she felt a pull to explore, to get to know herself, and to gain experiences that would shape her beyond the classroom.
Growing up, Bano witnessed firsthand the struggles of her family members as they sought medical care and support. These experiences fueled her passion for medicine and her desire to one day help those in need. But before diving headfirst into this demanding field, she wanted to take a step back and invest in herself. That’s when Sport 4 Life UK entered her world.
Introduced through NCS Graduates, Bano found herself immersed in projects that aligned with her values. She wasn’t just helping others; she was discovering new aspects of herself. From working on community projects to serving people in homeless shelters, she was making an impact in ways she hadn’t imagined. Along the way, she built connections with Sport 4 Life staff and quickly realised the meaningful work they were doing to support young people across the West Midlands.
What started as a chance introduction quickly became a series of opportunities for Bano. From social events to employability workshops, Sport 4 Life became her space to connect with like-minded people, grow her network, and make lifelong friends.
“When I think of Sport 4 Life, I think of a safe space. It’s where I can develop my skills, meet new people, and build connections with those who will push me to achieve big things in life”
Determined to gain practical experience before returning to her studies, Bano recently completed an employability programme with Sport 4 Life and Boston Tea Party. That programme led her to secure a part-time job at the cafe! Since then, she’s taken on a variety of roles—managing customers, handling pressure, and working in a fast-paced environment. These are all skills she knows will benefit her no matter where her future career leads.
Bano credits her time with Sport 4 Life for helping her develop essential life skills. From learning to be adaptable and working in teams to nailing interviews and managing her time, she’s gained practical tools she’ll carry with her. “Sport 4 Life teaches you real-life skills. It’s not just about CVs and applications; it’s about preparing you for success once you land that job,” she says.
One of her proudest moments came when Sport 4 Life gave her the incredible opportunity to be a baton bearer at the Commonwealth Games. “It was such a huge privilege—an experience I’ll never forget,” she shares.
Looking back on her journey, Bano is grateful for the experiences and guidance she’s received. She encourages any young person unsure of their next step to consider Sport 4 Life. “What’s clear to me is that everyone at Sport 4 Life UK genuinely cares. Whether it’s the CEO or a sports coach, they all push you out of your comfort zone, and that’s what makes the difference.”
