Kit’s story
Age 27
Kit (they/he) has faced more challenges than many experiences in a lifetime. From struggling with undiagnosed neurodivergence during their education to facing personal loss, health issues, coming out as trans, and domestic violence, Kit’s story is one of resilience and transformation—thanks in part to the support they received from Sport 4 Life UK.
Overcoming Early Barriers
Kit had a clear vision for their future during school, initially pursuing sociology and psychology at college. However, struggles with drug issues and personal loss led them to step away from education twice, each time trying to restart with new focus and determination. Despite a successful bid to study ecology and wildlife conservation at university, Kit’s first two years of higher education were marked by significant struggles with their physical and mental health, compounded by the global pandemic.
At the age of 22, Kit was diagnosed with autism and ADHD, a pivotal moment that reframed their experiences. “I wasn’t stupid or lazy,” Kit shared. “I just didn’t have the right support in an education system that wasn’t built for people like me.”
“SPORT 4 LIFE DOESN’T JUST CHANGE LIVES; IT SAVES LIVES”
Hitting Rock Bottom
After leaving university, Kit moved back to Birmingham and faced new challenges, including a domestic violence situation. Now living in supported accommodation, Kit felt isolated and unsure of their future. “I was at the lowest point in my life. I was just about getting by. I didn’t want to be around people,” Kit said. It was during this period that their support worker introduced them to Sport 4 Life UK, marking the beginning of a life-changing journey.
Finding Support Through Sport 4 Life UK
Through Sport 4 Life, Kit discovered a range of services tailored to their needs. He attended mentoring sessions with Don, sports activities with Zach, and employability workshops with Alarna and Zoe. Each interaction helped Kit build confidence, learn new skills, and gain a sense of belonging.
“Sport 4 Life doesn’t just change lives; it saves lives,” Kit said. “Their support is so versatile—they always meet me halfway, and there’s never any pressure to do anything I’m uncomfortable with. It feels personal and respectful.”
Over two years, Kit thrived. They developed life and professional skills, from conflict resolution to leadership. He even explored martial arts and fencing through Sport 4 Life’s social sports sessions.
“Don, my mentor, was my biggest cheerleader. He genuinely wanted the best for me. He helped me with my CV, guided me to courses and qualifications, and just listened. Sitting down with someone who truly cared about me and my future was invaluable.”
Becoming a Voice for Change
Kit’s journey with Sport 4 Life also saw them become an advocate for other young people. As Chair of the Youth Voice Committee, Kit has been instrumental in championing change not just within Sport 4 Life, but across their community.
“Sport 4 Life taught me how to engage with people in professional settings and gave me the confidence to lead and inspire others,” Kit explained.
Kit’s Message to Others
“You’re hearing this from me—Sport 4 Life is so much more than a poster or flyer. It’s worth a shot for anyone who wants more out of life. You don’t need to like sports or even know what you want; you just need to want something more.
Worst case scenario: it’s not for you.
Best case scenario: it changes your life.
For me, it did exactly that.”
Where Kit is Today
Today, Kit is navigating life with improved mental health, better mobility, and a strong support network. “I’m happy, I’m still depressed sadly but I’m definitely happier.”
For the first time in years, Kit is considering part-time work. “I believe it’s possible now. Sport 4 Life helped me envision a future I couldn’t see before.”
