Corey’s story
Age 25
Corey initially planned to pursue a career in sports after college. However, he decided to take a different path and studied English, Sociology, Psychology, and Biology before progressing to a degree in Sport and Exercise Science and Health at university. Like many students, Corey had high hopes of easily securing work experience and employment after graduation. Unfortunately, the COVID-19 lockdowns disrupted his university experience and made job hunting far more challenging than he had anticipated.
After months of relentless job searching, Corey struggled to find employment that aligned with his degree. To stay financially afloat, he took on multiple zero-hour contract roles over a long period. Reflecting on this tough period, Corey shared, “I applied to over 120 jobs over two years – it was an extremely difficult time for me.”
Recognising the need for support with his job applications and CV, Corey turned to the Job Centre, albeit with some hesitation. Initially, he believed they wouldn’t be able to provide the right assistance. However, it was here that Corey met Hannah, a mentor from Sport 4 Life UK.
Through Sport 4 Life, Corey gained valuable hands-on coaching experience by participating in our sports sessions and camps. This opportunity helped him develop the essential skills and experience that had been missing from his CV. “There wasn’t any pressure with the role, hours, or responsibilities. I enjoyed attending sessions, learning new things, and gaining the experience I needed,” Corey said.
“HANNAH CHANGED MY LIFE AND MY ENTIRE PERSPECTIVE”
In addition to gaining practical industry experience, Corey also took advantage of Sport 4 Life’s qualifications, completing courses such as the CSCS (Construction Skills Certification Scheme), SIA (Security Industry Authority), First Aid, and Safeguarding.
With his newly acquired skills and qualifications, Corey began progressing to interview stages when applying for jobs. Eventually, he secured a full-time administrative role with the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), marking the beginning of an exciting new chapter in his career. With years of experience now under his belt, Corey is currently working as a Referral Advisor for Maximus.
“This is an extremely rewarding role, as I am now helping people who were once in my position. It feels like a full 180-degree turnaround.”
Reflecting on his journey with Sport 4 Life, Corey expressed his gratitude for his mentor, Hannah. “Hannah changed my life and my entire perspective. She gave me the advice and support I needed to overcome my challenges. A big thank you to Hannah and Sport 4 Life.”
