As a Youth Career Mentor, you will provide one-on-one mentoring to help young people develop their social, emotional, and mental health (SEMH) skills, build resilience, improve life skills and prepare for the world of work, working with key stakeholders such as schools and job centres.

We’re looking for an individual who is compassionate, driven, and eager to grow, with a genuine passion for engaging with young people.

Through personalised one-on-one mentoring, you will help them develop crucial social and emotional competencies, build resilience, and prepare for success in the professional world.

Job description

  1. Engage with diverse communities in Birmingham and Sandwell, reaching out to young people aged 11 to 29 in various settings to provide tailored one-on-one mentoring experiences.
  2. Empower young people who are either in education, employment, or training (EET) or not in education, employment, or training (NEET) by offering mentoring sessions aimed at improving essential life skills and uncovering employment avenues.
  3. Facilitate the progression journey of young people by using a mix of holistic support and mentoring techniques, maintaining a focus on achieving sustainable employment and/or training/education at all times.

Person Specification


  • A relevant qualification –youth work, childcare support, advice or guidance qualification, or equivalent experience.
  • Evidence of CPD in youth education sector
  • Recruiting hard to reach young people. 
  • 1+ year of working with 11-29 year old EET and/or NEET  young people
  • An infectious passion, enthusiasm & charisma 
  • Excellent organisation skills 
  • A fully enhanced DBS disclosure
  • Ability and confidence to work alone 
  • Ability to complete administrative tasks, and use computers (e.g. email, word processing) 
  • A polite, professional appearance & manner 
  • High levels of self-motivation, energy and determination 
  • Evidence of commitment S4L’s vision


  • Level 3 in coaching & mentoring (or equivalent)
  • Delivering personal development support 
  • Delivering quality client Information, Advice and Guidance.
  • Managing a caseload of young people
  • An interest in and passion for sport
