During Half Term week in May, Sport 4 Life UK took 17 disadvantaged young boys from our TEENS programme on a three day residential trip to Lickey Hills Country Park in Worcestershire. For most of the young people (aged 12 to 16), this was their first chance to experience life away from home and being outside of Birmingham for the first time. It was also a great opportunity for them to gain their first formal qualifications in the form of a Sports Leaders Level 1 in Leadership, Youth Achievement Award, or Boxing Proficiency. Over the three days the young people also took part in various activities around the country park, including orienteering, scrambling, and tracking. Ricky, aged 15 said,
“It would have been great if we could have stayed for longer. I wish I had learnt these skills at school.”
These residential trips and qualifications help young people get away from the grind of daily life to develop some fundamental key skills such as communication, organisation, and leaderships. The skills that the young people develop will serve them very well their future lives to achieve their true potential.
